Surfing the Waves

Since the ocean waters were rough from the hurricane passing through, I knew it would be a good time to photograph some surfers.  I went to the Juno Beach Pier, and I definitely found some.
I had to shoot into the sun, so the shots aren't great, but it was fun to shoot them.  I tried to go back the next day but great swells were gone.

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter, FL

A fun morning spent at Blowing Rocks Perserve, Jupiter.  Blowing Rocks (aptly named), is a part of the Florida coast that is flanked with limestone. When it is high tide, the waves come crashing up and "blow".
Hurricane Irene had just passed by the Florida coast earlier in the week, and was making it's way east.  So the waters were a little more rough than usual, and the blowing was higher than I had seen in the past.
The sound of these waves crashing was like thunder!

I have never left Blowing Rocks without getting soaked, and today was no exception.  I was looking the other way when a big wave crashed up and knocked me down.  I was completely underwater for a few seconds, and I'll admit, it scared me.  For a second, I felt the power of the wave and the strength it had.  Then it was gone, and I was wiping the saltwater from my eyes - and my camera.
I was drenched but fine, as was my camera.  The waves were beautiful crashing up against those rocks, it was definitely worth the trip.

Thunderous Sunrise

I knew that sunrise, high tide and rough seas from the recent hurricane that passed through would make for some great conditions to photograph.  I wasn't wrong!

I knew a great place to go with extra high seas would be Blowing Rocks Preserve in Jupiter.  But Jupiter is an hour away.  And the Preserve does not open until 9am; sunrise is at 7am.  So you have to park in Coral Park and walk 1 mile on the beach to get to the Preserve.  But when I got there, the seas were too high and waves were crashing with a thunderous noise (not to mention that it was still dark), I was afraid to walk it.  I did debate on whether I could make it or not but decided it really wasn't safe.  I was glad I didn't risk it later that day when I got too close to a wave and it knocked me down and drenched me.  If I would have tried walking the beach this morning under these conditions, I know I would have been in trouble.

It really was a nice sunrise, with the big waves crashing like thunder.  Very pretty.

Green Cay Wetlands, Boynton Beach, FL

This is the boardwalk at Green Cay Wetlands in Boynton Beach.  I spend a lot of time here!
I'm here to photograph the wildlife, but it's also nice to be out in the sunshine, walking the boardwalk.
Nice reflections.
A great way to spend a few hours outside in the sunshine, with my camera.
